SOS - Save Our Seas!
From 5 April – 1 June 2008, The Tall Ship hosted a travelling exhibition from the National Maritime Museum, London, called ‘Your Ocean’. The exhibition asked visitors to think about the many ways in which human activity affects the oceans that cover over 70% of the earth’s surface.
- For hundreds of years we have extracted coal and oil from the seabed to supply us with energy - a resource that is rapidly running out.
- Every day we produce waste that can harm the ocean if it is not disposed of correctly.
- You might be surprised at how many of the things that we buy or own rely on the ocean in some way.
During May 2008, six local Eco-Schools responded to ‘Your Ocean’ by taking part in a series of workshops called ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. Developed in partnership with The Tall Ship, the Eco-Schools Officer for Glasgow City Council and freelance artist Sandra McNeil, the workshops aimed to increase awareness amongst upper primary pupils about ‘climate change’ and what they can do as individuals to help Save Our Seas.
Pupils created puppets from recycled packaging that they brought along to the workshop. The puppets are now displayed in the Main Gallery at The Tall Ship. The pupils pledged to recycle more objects more often and now members of the public are being asked to make a pledge to change something about their everyday lives to help Save Our Seas.
